‘Unless we learn from history, we are destined to repeat it.’
-Alex Haley, author

1. All Black History Scholar competitions are open to pupils aged between 11 and 15, studying in a London education institution (secondary school, academy, pupil referral unit or supplementary school).

2. A completed Scholar Competition Entry Form MUST accompany all entries for the essay and book review competitions. No submissions will be accepted without the appropriate entry form.

3. By entering the competition, entrants confirm that their essay and/or book review submission is their own original work. All submissions become the property of the competition organisers and will not be returned.

4. Entries will be judged by a panel of professionals with experience in the topics being studied. Judges will base their decisions on originality, expression of ideas, strength of argument, thoroughness of research and clarity.

5. Winning entries will be announced in March 2008. In addition to the scholarship prizes, the winning essays and book reviews will be posted on http://www.blackscholar.net and announced via press releases and email. The winning students’ schools will also be notified.

6. The scholarships awarded to competition winners are for higher education purposes only and are designed to encourage recipients to begin planning and saving for higher and further education. Further information on the scholarships will be sent to winners in due course.

7. Competition winners agree to, except where prohibited, allow the competition organisers to post, publish and/or reproduce their essays in whole or in part on the http://www.blackscholar.net website or in any publication and use their names and essays in promotional materials for publicity purposes without additional compensation. Appropriate attribution to the author will be given in all such cases.

8. The competition organisers reserve the right to contact the entrant’s school to confirm enrolment and eligibility. In the event that enrolment cannot be confirmed, the entrant may be disqualified from the competition.

9. By participating in this competition, entrants (a) agree to be bound by the Competition Rules and Requirements and by the decision of the competition organisers, which are final in all matters relating to the competition; and (b) acknowledge compliance with the Competition Rules and Requirements outlined in this booklet. Competition organisers reserve the right to reject any entries that it deems to be out of compliance with these rules.

10. The decision of the judges shall be final and whilst entrants can submit a written request for feedback on their entries, it shall be at the sole discretion of the judges as to whether such feedback will be provided.

11. The competition closing dates are set out on the competition pages of this web site. The competition organisers accept no responsibility for loss or delay to entries, however caused. Proof of posting will not be accepted as proof of delivery.
